5 Ways to Encourage Healthy Eating in Your Child

It’s dinnertime and the tantrums about veggies begin. Does this scene sound familiar? Are you continuously worried about your child’s eating habits? Don’t worry. You are not the only one.

Here are a few tips to encourage your child to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

1. Get them involved while making food

 Encourage healthy eating in children

When preparing meals, ask your child to help. They could suggest foods they would like to eat or what they do not want to eat. You could even ask them to do some simple parts of the preparation. They could add the dressing to the salad or place bread on either side of the sandwich. This way they know what they are eating and are more likely to eat something they made. It is also another way to bond with your child.

2. Give them the choice

Encourage healthy eating in children

The more you push your child to do something the more likely he or she is to resist it. If they do not like eggs, don’t force them to eat it. Suggest and incorporate substitutes such as lentils, nuts or beans in their food. This way they get the nutrition they need without a fight or tantrum during meal times.

3. Spread the food intake

Encourage healthy eating in children

One big mistake many parents make is to give their children three heavy meals with long gaps of no food in between. The tendency to snack in between and develop cravings for junk food increases. Combat this with by making a schedule where your child is eating every two to three hours. With this schedule, you are able to curb those cravings for junk food.

4. Water

Encourage healthy eating in children

Water is not only important for survival but is a key component for your child’s eating habits. Drinking a lot of water during the day will make the child feel full. Your child will tend not to crave food at the wrong times.

5. Make sure the family eats together

Encourage healthy eating in children

Have at least one meal where your entire family sits and eats together with no distractions. This way your child will learn to sit down and enjoy the meal in front of them rather than mindlessly eating in front of the television. They will get the opportunity to spend time with their family while enjoying a well-prepared meal.

Tasha measured 2 cups of baking flour, squinting her eyes as she levelled off the excess. Satisfied, her hands reached for the ingredients, laid out in ramekins and bowls right beside her. Mise-en-place, she calls it. She mixed the ingredients one by one, careful not to spill it. As the oven closes with a satisfying thud, Ms. Violet claps and says, “Well done!”

Fear of public speaking is common among children as well as adults. In a classroom full of children, gathering the courage to speak up is a daunting task for many. However, communicating effectively is not a nice to have skill anymore, it is an essential skill for today’s children as they are living in a fast paced world where no-one has the time to sit and listen to what others need.

Acquiring effective communication skills leads children to academic and social skills. Learning public speaking and communication skills help your child to overcome the fear and build up courage. When they speak up they become more self’-confident. Furthermore, effective communication skills increase your child’s influencing skills. If given proper attention in building up this crucial skill, you will see your child’s leadership skills boosting up.

Whatever the age of your child is, encouraging effective communication skills will help prepare them towards a successful adulthood.

1. Talk about their interests

Boost communication skills and confidence in Children

Discussing about your child’s interests is the best way to keep them talking. It does not matter whether their interest is in online games, computers, sports or cartoons. When you show your enthusiasm to know more about their interests, they get encouraged to communicate more. This also has an added adavantage of them sharing more about their lives with you.

2. A pat in the back

Boost communication skills and confidence in Children

Kids pay attention to their small achievements. My 11 year old comes to me for affirmation of every single event he considers his achievement. Most of the time, their achievements may not look like milestones to us. But, this is an opportunity where you could encourage them to speak more about their achievement. Ask them how they achieved that task, conquered that fear or solved that problem. This will not only help them to articulate better, but also to improve their self awareness.

3. Talk about current affairs

Boost communication skills and confidence in Children

Current affairs and news are not directly related to us on a personal level in most cases. Discussions around current affairs will help your child to express their viewpoints without any inhibition. This is especially beneficial when you are talking to a timid child.

Recently, I had a discussion with my kids regarding drug abuse. The starting point was an article that carried photos of people before and after they started using drugs. This not only helped them express their viewpoints, but also created awareness and general knowledge.

4. Involve your child in decision making

Boost communication skills and confidence in Children

The joy of of being valued can stir up confidence from unknown corners. Involve your child when you make decisions, they will feel empowered to contribute more. Their first lessons of brainstorming start here. As part of this, they will also learn how to consider varying viewpoints while making decisions.

5. Share a meal

Boost communication skills and confidence in Children

Don’t we meet people over a meal to have nice conversations, both on a personal and professional level? Dinner tables are great places to make people loosen up and share their views. This is also an inexpensive way to get your kids talk without inhibitions. Many studies have also proved that eating together helps children to form better relationship with their parents. Do you use the ‘Non-judgemental dinner table rule’? That is, you don’t ask challenging questions like “Why did you do that?” for any topic that is brought on to the dinner table. This will encourage your child to open up more. Do you have a dinner table rule?

You can also introduce them to public speaking when they are ready. Once they get to know more about public speaking and the myths surrounding it, they will be more open to pick up and learn that skill.

“I want to send my child for holiday activities, but school has been so hectic and I don’t know whether my child will end up more stressed!”

Have you ever found yourself thinking or saying the above when the holidays are near?

We have Jini from Whizz Kidz talking about holiday activities.

In recent years, the words play, fun and learning have been used together so often. About 50-100 years ago, these words would not even exist in the same sentence! However, seldom they get to play and have fun during school work. The idea of learning through play was explored as early as 1945 by Jean Piaget and has since been widely studied.

Learning through play means learning through enjoyable and pleasurable activities. Engaging in such activities gives children a sense of self-motivation, which is extremely important in one’s learning process.

One known benefit of learning through play is increased intellectual and cognitive abilities. Children exposed to learning through play have been found to have increased flexibility and potential for learning in later life. Other benefits include increased confidence, better social skills, communication and language, physical, reasoning skills and many more.

1. Social / Emotional Development

Holiday activities Singapore

During holiday programs, children learn to regulate their own emotions, as well as take into consideration other’s feelings. How children perceive their surroundings affects the brain’s physical development and their learning.

2. Brain Development

Holiday activities Singapore

Every camp explores its own unique range of topics that allows children to think, process information, solve problems, remember new information, make decisions and understand concepts.

3. Language and Communication Development

Holiday activities Singapore

Children meet and interact with other children from different cultures who speak different languages. This not only allows the child’s language skills to improve, but also allows children exposure and appreciation for different cultures.

4. Developing Independence

Holiday activities Singapore

Children often come to camp feeling extremely nervous and leave camp full of confidence at the end of the week. Throughout the week, the children engage in multiple activities that allow them to work independently, as well as in groups, building their confidence.

5. Exploring new interests

Holiday activities Singapore

Many camps offer new and novel activities for kids to try out such as Fun Science, Amazing Movie Making, Robotics, 3D printing and many more. It is important for children to have activities that interest them, besides their iPads, handphones and television programs in today’s day and age.

Whizz Kids has got a variety of holiday activities suited for various interest groups. For more information regarding amazing Whizz Kidz Holiday Camps, please visit Whizz Kidz.

Be patient with the ‘Why’s and the ‘How’s coming out from curious minds

Creativity has been a buzzword for a decade. Before creativity was deemed as important, parents had no idea where to look for information. Today, there is so much information available that parents now have no idea where to begin to satisfy the young curious minds! As a primer to creativity, it is worth taking time to separate the wheat from the chaff – what is creativity and more importantly, what isn’t creativity.

Mention the words “Creative Genius” and most people would think of a lone mathematical genius toiling away at some mathematical proof, or a gifted writer who receives a spark of inspiration and proceeds to write the next New York Times bestseller. Neither of these misconceptions do justice to what creativity really is – a skill. More importantly, a skill that, given the right investment of time and effort, can be strengthened.

Creative people are curious minds and do not develop their ideas in a vacuum

They pay attention to their surroundings and are intrigued by what they observe. George de Mestral, a Swiss electrical engineer by training, exemplifies this curiosity and attention to detail. After he had returned from a hunting trip with his dog, his curious mind became intrigued by the burrs that were stuck onto the dog’s coat. Examining them under the microscope, the engineer noted hundreds of “hooks” that caught on anything with a loop. This eventually gave him the idea for an invention that everyone is familiar with today – Velcro.

Children are naturally curious and this curiosity should be encouraged

However, the same child-like wonder that led to the invention of Velcro is also the bane of many parents. All too often, parents get irritated by their child’s incessant “whys” and their ire gradually tells children to stop asking so many questions. Next time, if you find yourself on the receiving end of your child’s curiosity, encourage him or her to find the answers. Better yet, make it a bonding activity where the both of you can try to find the answer together. You may not always get a totally satisfactory answer for the curious minds of your child or yours every time, nor would the answer definitely lead to a new innovation. However, the message that is sent to the child is very important: keep taking in the details around you, and never stop being curious.
